Pulmonary mucormycosis presenting as central bronchopleural fistula—a case report with review of literature

Abstract Background Bronchopleural fistula (BFF) is a fistulous communication between the trachea or bronchus and pleural space. Central type of bronchopleural usually post-surgical. Infective cause for central rare. This case report encompasses an infective fistula, mucormycosis. Pulmonary mucormycosis rapidly progressive condition with high mortality. A index suspicion timely intervention required to alleviate fatal outcome. The present discussed in detail about clinical presentation diagnostic imaging pulmonary presenting fistula. Case Thirty-five years old diabetic male, presented fever, productive cough, mild haemoptysis chest pain 10 days duration. patient was pale on general examination had decreased breath sound right suprascapular interscapular areas coarse crackles infrascapular infra-axillary areas. laboratory investigations were unremarkable except anaemia raised blood glucose level. Sputum potassium hydroxide (KOH) mount showed broad aseptate hyphae. There loculated hydropneumothorax collapsed lung radiograph. Multi-detector computed tomography thorax revealed main bronchus, consolidation middle lobe superior segment lower multiple internal thick-walled cavities. Right pneumonectomy performed as did not improve medical management worsening symptoms. Histopathological suggestive Conclusion due aetiology uncommon. However, should be considered differential diagnosis cases destroyed lung, especially individuals. Hence, necessary early disease delay treatment leading
